“Let our dreams teach us about the brevity of life and the fleeting nature of happiness.”

This unique production of Sueño by José Rivera follows the journeys of both Rosaura and Segismundo as they each must attempt to face the nightmares that have been forced upon them by oppressors. But are the nightmares real? Is what we think to be “real life” just a dream?  If it is a dream – who’s dream is it? Within this surreal world of discomfort and dark comedy, a painterly mountainous structure glares at the audience, and is surrounded by a Salvador Dali-esque terrain. Three massive, looming rocks inspired by the ominous art of Zdistaw Bekinski – linger menacingly above the characters, tracking harshly across the space with a deep rumble. Representing the progression of Segismundo’s supposed prophecy, these rocks separate and come together to create the impending eclipse. A sharp and intimidating chandelier made of bones and metal as well as a hefty banner transforms the setting into King Basilio’s palace hall. This demonstrates Basilio’s rash respect towards the “greater powers” and harsh ignorance towards his son, as well as the impending battle ahead against the monster he created. After the climactic battle and all the death, it is then that we understand that this story has submerged downright into the nightmare realm. As the eclipse reaches its peak; a blackout, a screech and an unexpected and unlikely projected flash occur before the refreshing breath of waking up.
