INTO THE WOODS

Into the Woods is an adventure story based around many fairytale characters from our childhood, except that Sondheim actually takes us down a much deeper and darker path. With the end of the first act representing a kind, wrapped-up ending to a child appropriate tale, I wanted to emphasize the story-telling elements and incorporate a painterly/ book illustration aesthetic. This greatly contrasts how dark the show becomes later on, creating a less anticipated ending as well as helping to stray the audience away from reality. The colorful texture of this stylization as well as the stained-glass nature of the leaves on the wire-like trees create an almost dream world that helps to widen the imagination. Little does the audience know that this dream is quickly about to become very real.
